March Fun for Kids Almaguin

I am a Mom of three kids and it is amazing what you can do on a budget in the north over March Break.  I had the whole week to entertain my kids.  Here is a break down of fun things to do.

We went cross country skiing at least four times, once we took them to Arrowhead which cost us $27 for all day for a family of 5.  The kids were able to feed the birds from their hands, there was a warming building where we sat to enjoy our picnic lunch to eat and the trails were amazing.  We purchased our skis from Salvation Army for around $100 for the whole family of 5 and so far we got two years use from them.  We also spent two days making our own trails in the bush and there was no cost involved in skiing that way.

We also took our kids to Rockridge Tubing Hill in Huntsville.  If you purchase your tickets for tubing in December you only pay $9/ticket for 2 hours of tubing.  $45 for a family of 5 to go tubing and you take your own picnic lunch is another great way to enjoy a fun day with the family.
The next thing we got to enjoy was Ice Skating on the lakes and in local communities which is totally free.  Some communities also provide complimentary use of their skates making this fun event completely free.
We also made a Toboggan Hill which again was free.  Most communities up north always offer at least one fun event during March Break.  Most of the time they are free or have a very nominal cost.
March Break is also a great time for cottage rentals.  Many tourist travel south for March Break so the demand for cottage rentals go down at this time.  Many Cottage Resorts offer discounts in Muskoka and the Almaguin Highlands during this holiday.  Sand Lake Cottages & Inn offers a Chalet for a family of 4 for as little as $100/night, very economical for a family because the Chalet has a full kitchen so families can cook all their own meals.

You only have to travel 2.5 hours from Toronto to take advantage of a really great winter vacation during March Break.  The Almaguin Highlands is a great destination throughout the whole year.
